My Productivity Fetish

Posted by David Young

I’m guilty of the typical geeky “productivity fetish” - it’s an engineer’s natural instinct to try to optimize, streamline, and “debug” their lives. I stumbled across a great article which puts this productivity obsession in perspective. Here’s my favourite quote:

“Shouldn’t we be striving for productivity in an attempt to have more time for ourselves, to do the things on that other to-do list, the one we label “some day when I have time” or are we pushing ourselves to be more productive so we can have more time to work, more excuses to not play with the kids, more reasons to let dust settle on that one, really important to-do list?”

The Past Sucks, The Future’s where it’s at

Posted by David Young

Inspired by this post about how to prepare to meet your time-travelling future self, a friend asked me, “If you had the opportunity to travel 100 years into the past, or 100 years into the future, which would you choose?”

Without hesitation, I’d choose to travel 100 years into the future. Who cares what happened 100 years ago in New Zealand / South Africa? (I’m assuming one rule of time-traveling is that you can’t change the past, so all you’ll be able to do is spectate.)

The future would be much more exciting - flying cars, technology, etc.

100 years ago? Horses, sweaty unwashed humans, no air-conditioners… no thanks! :)

My good friend, Simon Young (no relation), interviewed me over the weekend for his “Jump In” podcast. “Jump In” is the social media podcast from iJump, an innovative company that makes sense of social media for you or your clients.

I was really nervous (silly, isn’t it), and I’m not sure I answered even one of the questions accurately! I felt like I was waffling, and several times, as I ended off my answer, I thought to myself, “Umm.. what was the question again?”

Thanks, Simon, for the interview!

Our “strog” deliverer

Posted by David Young

See the Morning
See the Morning
Gayle’s just bought Chris Tomlin’s “See The Morning” album, specifically for his song, “Everlasting God”. We first heard “Everlasting God” in the Vineyard in South Africa. Due to a typo on the song lyrics system, the second line of the chorus was “… our hope, our strog deliverer”. I remember remarking on it the first time I saw it, and sharing a quiet chuckle with the folks seated near me.

Now we’re listening to the song here on the other side of the world, and remembering the “Sundowner” home group (most of whom were in the worship team), with fondness. Specifically, Charles Webster, since Gayle loves the way he plays this particular song ;)

(This is Chris, not Charles. There’s no easily available video of Charles leading worship…)
