The Past Sucks, The Future’s where it’s at

Posted by David Young

Inspired by this post about how to prepare to meet your time-travelling future self, a friend asked me, “If you had the opportunity to travel 100 years into the past, or 100 years into the future, which would you choose?”

Without hesitation, I’d choose to travel 100 years into the future. Who cares what happened 100 years ago in New Zealand / South Africa? (I’m assuming one rule of time-traveling is that you can’t change the past, so all you’ll be able to do is spectate.)

The future would be much more exciting - flying cars, technology, etc.

100 years ago? Horses, sweaty unwashed humans, no air-conditioners… no thanks! :)

Post nuclear holocaust wastefields, formation of a new region called European Asia, the British retreating to Scotland and re-erecting Hadrian’s wall using current technology, the United Counties of America becoming a monitoring centre, selling worldwide detailed information to their allies and conducting armchair strikes on the third world, population hits 10 billion and shows no sign of stopping as GE and nanotech have solved the world famine issue. We’ve survived wave after wave of super virus, some of which wiped millions from the world population. Most natural species are bordering on extinction and super animals are bred for food. We’re still extracting oil because we’ve either found more or have made much tougher pumps. We’ve finally sorted out personal transportation and no longer are driving on roads in the cities - instead running on personal rail type thingies. Oh, I’m done.
