Who’s the boss? Turns out it’s me :)
As of the 1st April 2007, I’m no longer a one-man show, I’m an… employer
Charlene Vos started on 2 April 2007, officially titled “Account Manager”. Charlene’s responsibilities range from tech support, to sales, to administration.
She even has her own blog! (Charlene’s Corner)
It’s now been 3 hectic weeks of training, systems-building (it’s not as easy to let things slip through the cracks when you do it properly the first time, I’m learning), and laying-of-groundwork, and it’s been…
…absolutely fantastic. Obviously we understood upfront that there would be a huge amount of training and development to be done before Charlene is able to work with a degree of independence from me, but at the 3-week mark, we’re already at the point where we work semi-independently, with Charlene handling sales and scheduling, while I handle development and technical call outs.
My wife and I have both noticed the reduction in my stress levels – it’s not necessarily as if there’s less work on my plate, but there’s the subconscious knowledge that I’m not alone now, that I’m part of a team, and so I don’t feel the crushing burden of sole responsibility for every client’s every crisis.
Charlene’s has a wonderful work ethic – she’s commited, competent, and driven. I’m delighted to have her as part of Funky Penguin.
For my part, I’m trying to be the kind of boss I would have like to have, when I was employed. I make a point of ensuring she has the tools she needs to do her job (technology-wise), and we talk and evaluate our current tasks, working relationship, etc.
